Established in 1849, Oakwood Cemetery is a Texas Historic Cemetery as well as the oldest city-owned cemetery in Tyler. As a public, city cemetery, it is maintained by the Tyler Parks Department. It covers approximately 8-1/2 acres and has over 2000 marked graves. The natural beauty of Oakwood's majestic Magnolia trees, pine trees and dogwood trees and in the Spring-bluebonnets, set the background for glorious walks through history. To enter, use the gate on Ellis Street. In the center of the cemetery, a kiosk holds information pamphlets that explain all there is to see and know about Oakwood.
